AAV ArtCast, 16th Edition: Art Collecting 101 - How to Determine the Value of Your Art Collection

In this episode, we are continuing our Art Collecting 101 Series and we are focusing on How to Determine the Value of your Art Collection. And to help us discuss this topic, we have invited Alvah T. Beander to help us. Alvah is a certified personal property appraiser specializing in African, African American and African Diaspora art. Upon completing the requirements (pending) of senior level appraiser in the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) she will become the first African American and women awarded the designation in African art. She is currently an adjunct professor of management, marketing and ecommerce at Strayer University. Alvah earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Bennett College for Women and a MBA from Marymount University. The certification in appraisals studies: Personal Property was earned at George Washington University. She is the CEO and Founder of Melanin Art Appraisers, LLC based in Alexandria, Virginia.

AAV, ArtCast, 15th Edition, Art Collecting 101: Navigating the Art Fair

For this episode, F. Lennox (Lenny) Campello joins us to talk about navigating the Art Fair. Lenny is a widely published Washington, DC and Philadelphia based art critic, as well as an award winning artist and curator. He is also often heard on NPR and the Voice of America discussing visual art issues. Campello also reports on Mid Atlantic area art news for the TV show ArtsMedia News. Lenny Studied art at the University of Washington School of Art in Seattle, under Professors Norman Lundin, Alden Mason, Jacob Lawrence, Everet DuPen and others. Although he graduated from Washington in 1981, the artist started to sell his work professionally in 1977, when he became one of the regular exhibiting artists at Seattle s world famous Pike Place Market, where over four years he sold, gave away or traded over two thousand works of art. Lenny is also one of the Internet s leading arts bloggers, and since 2003 his visual arts blog (Daily Campello Art News: dcartnews.blogspot.com) has been one of the web s first art blogs and currently has nearly 20,000 weekly readers, making it one of the highest ranked art blogs in the world.

AAV ArtCast, 14th Edition: Art Collecting 101 - Art Decorating Trends and Tips

For this episode,we are resuming our Art Collecting 101 Series and today we are focusing on Art and Interior Design. We invited Susan Featherstone-Schemm, Co-Principal of Design Scheme Interiors LLC to talk with us about tips on decorating your home with art as well as working with an interior designer with your art. Susan Schemm has a Degree in Interior Design from Bradley Academy, and has advanced knowledge in all aspects of interior design; residential, commercial, hospitality, educational and healthcare. It is her goal to help her clients create beautiful yet functional spaces. AAV ArtCast, 12th Edition, Art Collecting 101: Art Framing 101

We are continuing our series Art Collecting 101 and today we are talking about framing your art. October is National Art and Framing Month, and thousands of frame shops and art galleries will be celebrating with a variety of special events and programs designed to promote the enjoyment of art and framing as a part of daily life. To help us kick off this celebration and help us learn more about how to properly frame our art, we invited Eric Zacharias, Certified Picture Framer, and owner of Studio Frameworks, based in Crofton, Maryland to talk with us. Mr. Zacharias has been working in the art framing field for 42 years and opened Studio Frameworks, a wholesale framing company in 1999. Through this business, he has framed artwork for such organizations as The Smithsonsian's American History Museum, The Phillips Collection, the Library of Congress, and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, just to name a few. He frames the artwork over 75 Maryland State Professionals Photographers and dozens of local artists and corporations. Mr. Zacharias holds a business degree from the University of Akron.

Mr. Robertson is an avid collector of artwork, the majority of which are works on paper. He serves on the Acquistion Committee of the Delaware Art Museum and serves on the boards of the James E. Lewis Museum of Art Foundation (Baltimore, MD) and the Brandywine Workshop (Philadelphia, PA). He presented this topic recently at a workshop at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

We are continuing our series Art Collecting 101 and on this episode, we are talking about developing a relationship with an art gallery. We interviewed Myrtis Bedolla of Galerie Myrtis, a Baltimore-based gallery, about how new collectors can build this important relationship to help develop a collection. Ms. Bedolla has over 20 years of experience as an artist's representative and in preparing artists for the art market through lectures, workshops, and invidual consulting. In addition, Ms. Bedolla advises corporate, private and instituational collectors in the acquistion and sale of fine art; and provides corporations, civic and arts organizations with professional curatorial services, lectures and educational programming. Ms. Bedolla has also served as cultural liaison for the embassies of Ghana, Haiti, Republic of Georgia and Zimbabwe. She uses art to encourage cultural exchange and awareness.

Authentic Art Visions, the ArtCast is continuing with our Art Collecting 101 Series and for this episode, we are talking photography. Photography is a starting point for many new art collectors because the prices, even for the work of acknowledged masters, are very reasonable when compared to many other art forms. Some wonderful images by emerging photographers can be purchased for as little as $250 a piece. Works by recognized photograpers are often only a few thousand dollars. Camille Mosley-Palsey of Pasley Place Photography (www.pasleyplace.com) and Anacostia Fine Art (www.anacostiafineart.com) talks with us to help us learn more about collecting and caring for fine art photography. Camille is a photographer, a former gallery director (Touchstone Gallery in Washington,DC), and independent curator. She is a graduate of the Corcoran College of Art and Design and a Washington,DC native. She recently completed her lastest series of photographs entitled "Mama Love" which features mothers and their babies. The photographs have been exhibited at Artomatic (Washington, DC) and the National Institutes of Health. They will be soon be published into a book by the same name.

Authentic Art Visions, , 8th Edition: Art Collecting 101: The Role of the Art Critic - Interview with JW Mahoney

We continue with the second installment of our Art Collecting 101 series with a discussion about the Art Critic and how their reviews may or may not guide your decisions regarding purchasing an artist's work. For this discussion, we talked to J.W. Mahoney, a noted Washington, D.C.-based artist, critic, and independent curator who serves as Washington s Corresponding Editor for Art in America. He is currently a Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and has been writing and curating on the idea of transmodernity since 1992. His most recent nationally published piece on this subject was Transmodern Yoko, which appeared in Art in America in February 2002. His latest one-person show, Stella Maris, was on exhibit in January 2007, at Curator s Office in Washington, D.C.

Authentic Art Visions, 7th Edition: 100 Years of Service: The Alpha Kappa Alpha Story on Exhibition

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will collaborate with the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. to feature an exhibit that showcases the 100-year history of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and chronicles the sorority s birth and evolution into one of the world s leading service organizations. From July 12-July 20,2008 the Historical Society will house the exhibition titled: 100 Years of Service: The Alpha Kappa Alpha Story. This multi-media Centennial Traveling Exhibit traces Alpha Kappa Alpha s history from its founding by nine visionary women at Howard University to its prominence as one of the world s leading service organizations. We talked to Melody M. McDowell of the National Office of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority about the exhibition and the Centennial Celebration of the sorority in Washington DC.

The exhibition is on view from June 11-August 30, 2008 and the opening reception is June 18, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
