    This spring has continued to be a busy one.

    • We participated in the Greater Washington Area Womens Division of the National Bar Association's annual fundraising auction in May. We donated several artworks from local emerging artists including Katherine Kisa, Margaret Paris and Anthony Armstrong;
    • We participated in Spiritual Essence Yoga's Community Fair in Upper Marlboro, Maryland where we selected our First Anniversary Contest Winner, Shawanda Spivy from Upper Marlboro.
    • On June 14th, we had the opening of "The Visual Experience" featuring the unique artworks of Charlie Jones, Jr. at Cafe Nema in Washington, DC on June 14th;
    • We also featured four wonderful artists from "East of the River" (Sheila Crider, Amber Robles Gordon, Ashley Oubre and Camille Mosley Pasley) at the Hillcrest Home and Garden Tour Reception on June 17th.

    Check out the photos from these events here. Also, we have more events coming up including a special Charity Fundraiser that we are co-sponsoring with Creative Artisans on July 19th (see below).

    On Collecting: Valuing the Work of Artists with No Auction Trail

    This article originally appeared in Art Info.com, an online source regarding the visual arts. Because many of us buy art from relatively unknown artists, people often raise the question of value regarding their artworks, especially if the art has not been presented at an auction.

    Artist Spotlight....

    Though I cannot remember exactly how I came to be aware of this awesome abstract artist, I have been impressed with her artwork, but more importantly, her dedication to humanistic concerns of her home country of Eritrea in East Africa. She has a solo show coming up this month and I invite you to see her work up close and personal. Read more about this wonderful artist below.

    Where are you originally from and how long have you been an artist?

    I am originally from Eritrea, a small country in East Africa. Eritrea is located north of Ethiopia and borders the Red Sea. I have enjoyed the arts for many years, but I have been painting for the past nine years.

    What inspires you in creating your art?

    This is a loaded question, there is so much that inspires me: nature, textures, colors, other artists, paintings, music, books, languages, poetry, history, and my family all inspire me. The act of painting and creating abstract pieces, being open to the process and communicating visually is inspiring. Socio-political issues especially in Africa are also subjects I explore through my art. The struggle for democracy in my country of origin, women’s issues and language are themes that I explore, interpret and continue to revisit through my abstract compositions.
