appeared on the Art History Club website
and I thought it provided
good information about art collecting.
Art Collecting: For Profit and Pleasure - Part
1
Have you ever considered collecting art for
investment purposes? If you are at home or in your
office take a quick look around. Chances are that
you have some sort of art hanging on your walls. You
or some else selected it because you need something
to put on your walls and you liked the how it looks.
In some cases the price may have been a
consideration. Since you will buying art, why not
select works that have investment potential?

Artist, K. Wesley Clark
The one thing I can say about this artist is that his
work is hot, hot, HOT!
Where are you originally from and how long have
you been an artist?
I was born in Washington, DC and raised in Silver
Spring MD. I’ve been an artist all my life really. I
clearly remember my first sketchbook was a three
ring binder with regular lined paper in it and I would
draw Ninjas and Christmas stockings – all types of
stuff. That’s probably the only sketchbook that I
don’t still have today. All through my years of
school, my notebooks have art all through them
(which is amazing because I did really good in school-
not sure how). I got serious my senior year of high
school when I found I could really go to college and
make a living with my art.
What inspires you in creating your art?
I really do get inspiration from everywhere; looking at a tree-lined horizon when the sun is setting, two girls playing in their yard, or flipping through a victory secret ad. I just constantly want to give people something new and fresh and funky to look at. That’s my main goal when creating art and what drives it. I wrote on the wall of my old studio, “You can only sustain creative life BY BIRTHING THE NEW!”
Schwanda Roundtree, Chair
GWAC Foundation, Inc. and the Greater Washington
Area Chapter (GWAC), Women Lawyers Division an
affiliate of the National Bar Association will be
hosting their 19th Annual Fundraising Auction on
May 19, 2006 from 6:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at the
Renaissance Washington DC Hotel located at
999 9th
Street N. W.
Many of the DC area's fine art galleries and art
dealers, including Authentic Art Consulting will be
donating art for GWAC's fundraising efforts to
support community programs.
I recently talked to Schwanda
Roundtree, Chair of the 19th Annual Fundraising
Auction about the event and how the donations are
put to use for the community.
Tell me about GWAC and the GWAC Foundation,
Inc.
GWAC is a network of more than 200 primarily
African-American women attorneys who are
committed to improving the quality of life in the
Greater Washington, DC area through direct
involvement in the community. We place a
particular focus on working with the youth and senior
citizens. Our membership represents a diversity of
the legal profession that includes attorneys from law
firms, corporations, the government sector, as well
as the judiciary.
How long has the Auction been sponsored by the
GWAC Foundation and where do the funds go?
This marks GWAC and the GWAC Foundation’s 19th
Annual Fundraising Auction. In partnership with our
friends and supporters, we have set an ambitious
goal to raise $50,000 to support our 13th year of
service to young girls at Malcolm X Elementary
School (Malcolm X) with one-to-one academic
tutoring, mentorship, and monthly cultural and
recreational activities. This event supports our work
at the Washington Center for Aging Services (WCAS)
where we participate in recreational therapy
programs for senior residents. We promote
intergenerational bonding during the Christmas
season when the girls from Malcolm X serenade the
seniors at WCAS with holiday carols.
A lot of art is featured as part of the Auction.
Can you provide an example of local or national
artists that will be featured this year?
Some of the artists who will be participating in this year’s Auction includes: Peter Robinson, Victor Ehikhamenor, Tiffany Yancey, Camellia Blackwell, and K. Wesley E. Clark. The silent auction will include a number of crafts and art pieces from South Africa, Mali and Zimbabwe.
What galleries and art companies are donating
art to this year’s auction?
Some of the galleries and art companies that are
participating include Authentic Art Consulting,
Ramee
Art and Adobe Design Center, The
Graham Collection, Nevins Gallery, Levis
Artifacts, Fayes
Impressions, Attitude Exact,
Gallery Petalouth and
Jennings Gallery.
How can people find out more about getting
tickets to this year’s event? Tickets for this event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. To purchase tickets, contact Tiffany Armstrong at tiffarmstrong@prodigy.net.
