    Authentic Art Tips...

    Art Collecting Tips: Straight from the Collectors

    On February 2, 2006, Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC held a panel presentation entitled Collecting for the Young Professional. The lunch time panel discussion featured art collectors who shared their advice on starting an art collection.

    Their advice was rather basic but straightforward:

    • Get to know the artists that you buy from, learn about their body of work.
    • Look for art that keeps you engaged.
    • Look for something that you like and that you can afford.
    • Move art around periodically in your home to change the look.
    • Don't over intellectualize the art you choose.
    • When buying art, think about how long you want to live with it.

    Learn some new art tips this month! Authentic Art Consulting is teaming with Design Scheme Interiors to offer an art decorating workshop at Overdue Recognition Art Gallery in Bowie, Maryland on Saturday, March 18th!
    Details below!

    Artist Spotlight....

    Left: Courtyard at the Souleiado, oil on paper by Elena Maza

    Artist, Elena Maza

    I first met artist Elena Maza when I went to my first steering committee meeting of the Women's Caucus of Art, DC Chapter last June. Her warm and engaging personality as well as her talent won me over instantly.

    Since Elena's art will be honored along with other WCA/DC members as part of the La Cuisine de Artiste project at The Golden Flame Restaurant in Silver Spring, Maryland later this month, I thought I would be fitting to interview her and share her art with the world.

    Where are you originally from and how long have you been an artist?

    I was born I Havana, Cuba; I came to the U.S. in 1961, two years after Castro’s Revolution. I’ve been drawing and painting since early childhood. My first art exhibition took place in 1976, at a friend’s house, but in wasn’t until 1991 that I became serious about being a professional artist.

    What inspires you in creating your art?

    My inspiration comes from the things I find beautiful, whether it be the natural landscape, the way light falls on an object or building, or human situations. Nostalgia for my native land and the ruin brought about by Castro’s regime is one of the main themes in my work—my heart aches for my people and I share their desire to be free.

    Talking Art With...

    Design Scheme Interiors, LLC (DSI)

    Design Scheme Interiors, LLC is a new, sassy and innovative interior design firm that was launched this year by designers Susan Featherstone- Schemm and Sherry Burton-Ways. Their main design studio is located in Catonsville, Maryland (near Baltimore) with a satellite studio in Washington, DC.

    Authentic Art Consulting will be working with DSI to provide fine art for their clients. We will also be working together to co-present workshops and other activities.

    Since AAC will be working closely with this firm, we wanted to introduce them to you as a resource for your interior decorating and design needs.

    How long has your company been in business?

    Our company has been in business 3 months. However, both of us have a combination of 8 years of design experience.

    What kind of services do you provide for clients?

    We provide a multitude of interior design and decorating services for homeowners and business owners. Our services include:

    • Space planning and furniture placement;
    • Window Treatments;
    • Furniture and art consultation for interiors;
    • Custom furniture;
    • Color consultations for interiors including color therapy for mood enhancement;
    • Project management for large-scale home and interior remodeling projects;
    • Holistic Interior Design- using environmentally friendly materials and non-toxic paints;
    • Feng Shui for those who want to create good energy in their homes or businesses.

    What advice can you give about decorating with art in the home?

    Make sure that whatever room you are considering placing art in is carefully balanced with furniture and other accessories. Nothing should look forced or too contrived looking. This is a really important point in collecting and hanging art- sometimes people try too hard.

    How can someone find out more about your services?

    You can simply go on line at www.designschemeinteriors.com or call (410) 744- 2977 (Baltimore Studio) or (202) 257-6165 (Washington, DC Studio).

    I first met Jackie Thompson, co-owner of Overdue Recognition Gallery at the Congressional Black Caucus in September 2005. We instantly hit it off and have become good colleagues in our passion for art.

    Since Authentic Art Consulting will be working with the gallery to offer workshops and other activities (see AAC News below about our workshop on March 18th!) thought it would be a great opportunity to feature the gallery in our Gallery Spotlight so you can learn more about this great resource for African American art in Prince George's County, Maryland. Recently, Jackie agreed to talk with us a little about the gallery.

    How long has your gallery been in business?

    The gallery had its one year anniversary in November 2005.

    What led you to open your own gallery?
