10 Tips for Framing Your Art
The National Art and Framing Month Council provides
the following helpful tips for framing your
art:
- 1. The frames, mats, glass and methods
used to
support the art will vary for each piece to be framed.
A professional picture framer’s job is to provide a
good presentation for your piece while protecting the
artwork as much as possible. Tell the framer the
importance of the piece. Is it a fun poster for the
kid’s room or the last portrait of your great
grandmother?
- Choose the appropriate frame. Frames
are
available in thousands of sizes, colors and finishes.
Many are designed for a specific use. There are
special mouldings for mirrors, shadow box frames and
art on canvas. Accurate historical designs are also
available.
- Mats surrounding artwork present the art for
viewing as well as provide air circulation. There
are
several types of matboard; depending on the level of
quality required for the piece. Acid-free is good but it
is only one feature of a quality matboard, the fiber
content and purity are also important.

(1859-1937)
Authentic Art Consulting invites you to join us in a
special tour and reception of one of America's most
talented artists, Henry Ossawa Tanner at
the Baltimore Museum of Art (see Events below).
One of the first African-American artists to achieve
international acclaim, Henry Ossawa Tanner
welcomed the younger generation into
his Parisian studio to give them advice and
encourage their careers. This exhibition explores how
Tanner's achievements inspired those artists who
returned home to search for their own racial and
artistic identities in 20th-century America. The
exhibition presents six paintings by Tanner along with
approximately 40 paintings, prints, drawings, and
photographs by African-American artists from the
BMA's collection, including William H. Johnson, Jacob
Lawrence, James Van Der Zee, and Hale Woodruff.
This is the second in a series of exhibitions that
highlight the art, life, and influences of Henry Ossawa
Tanner.
